五一期間有條新聞沖上了熱搜，兩位女性疑似插隊，身后的小伙子不樂意，于是二人怒目而視，對男生一頓口誅筆伐。

在現實生活中，我們也會碰到一些沒有素質的人。他們會超出規定裝修時間，午休時仍在擾民；從樓上扔垃圾；抽煙不分場合，還亂扔煙頭；一點小事就罵罵咧咧，張牙舞爪要動手……遇到這些人，我們難免會氣上心頭，胸中郁結，從而影響到自己原本美好的心情。這種情況下我們該怎樣迅速平復下來呢？

我們之前聽過的 TED 大都在 10 分鐘以上，而今天跟大家分享的這篇動畫 TED 只有不到 5 分鐘。對于畏懼長文的同學來說，聽力負擔大大減輕。而且這篇文章和我們的生活息息相關，詞匯大都比較簡單。另一個值得一提的點在于，這篇演講也涉及到一些大家眼生，但卻是四六級、考研大綱規定的詞匯。

對了，演講者的口音是標準的 RP，即標準的英式讀音，非常清晰。待會大家先自己盲聽一遍，再看講解。

One of the most important ways to calm down Is the power to hold on, even in challenging situations, to a distinction between what someone does, and what they meant to do. In law, the difference is enshrined in the contrasting concepts of murder and manslaughter. The result may be the same. The body is inert in a pool of blood. But we collectively feel it makes a huge difference what the perpetrators' intentions were.

整段譯文：最重要的平復方法之一是區分某人所做之事及其意圖，即便情況比較棘手，也要堅持如此。在法律上，這種差別體現在謀殺和過失殺人這兩個對立概念中。二者造成的結果可能一樣。尸體倒在血泊中，再無生氣。但我們普遍認為，兩類罪犯的意圖存在很大區別。

hold on to sb / sth

這個短語要注意中間有個 to，不能漏掉。一方面，它可以表示「保留，保存」某物，比如，hold on to letters「保存信件」；另一方面，它有 to keep something rather than losing it, selling it 「守住，保住」之義，尤其是守住那些對己方有利的東西。在這篇演講中，hold on to a distinction... 直譯過來是「守住區別」，但大家會發現，這樣的譯文太過生硬，所以我們意譯為「堅持把……區分開來」。

Firms are now keen to hold on to the people they recruit.

各公司現在都急切地想要留住招聘來的員工。

be enshrined in sth

詞根詞綴

要想記住 enshrine，我們先來看 shrine。它原指「圣地；神龕」，比如，麥加被尊為 the holiest shrine 「最神圣之地」。后來「圣地」不再僅僅指宗教意義上的圣地，而是泛指「具有重要意義的地方」，尤其是跟名人、著名事件有關之地。

en- 是一個常見的動詞性前綴，表示「使……」，比如，enlarge 使變大、enrich 使豐富。所以合在一起后的 enshrine 用來表示「視……為神圣；珍藏」。通常構成搭配 be enshrined in sth 來使用。但在這里，我們直譯為「珍藏差別」顯然不合適，意譯為「差別體現在……」會是更好的選擇。

These rights are enshrined in the country's constitution.

這些權利已莊嚴地載入國家憲法。

近義詞區分：murder & manslaughter

通過上面的文段，想必很多同學已經能區分開 murder 和 manslaughter。都是殺人，但 murder 是故意或有預謀地殺人，manslaughter 則是指 the crime of killing sb illegally but not deliberately「過失殺人」。二者的惡意成都不同，murder 更重，所以判刑更嚴厲。

從語法上來說，murder 兼有名詞、動詞兩種詞性，而 manslaughter 只是名詞，不能作動詞。

inert

六級詞匯

雖然 inert 本人并沒有出現在四六級大綱中，然而它對應的名詞 inertia 卻光榮在榜，所以這倆我們都得掌握。在化學中，inert 用來形容「惰性的」物質，比如，氖氬等「惰性氣體」，英文為 inert gases。此外，它還可以形容 not very lively or interesting「呆滯的，遲緩的」。我們在吃完午飯后就經常進入「呆滯」狀態（怎么辦，我吃了晚飯也呆滯）；某些機構辦事效率低，也可以用 inert 來修飾。

由此，inertia 也有不同含義。既可以指物質的「惰性」，也可以指人、機構等的「惰性，遲鈍」。好，我們讀一讀 2020 年 7 月六級完形中的一句話。

First, don't indulge in despair, because despair leads to inertia and doing nothing means certain disaster.

首先，不要在絕望中沉淪，因為絕望會導致惰性；而不作為則意味著某種災難會降臨。

collectively

考研詞匯

簡單但好用的一顆副詞。collectively 既可以指多方「共同地」做某件事情，也可以指某個數字累計達到某個值，相當于 in total。形容詞是 collective，比如，a collective decision 是「集體決定」。它也常和 responsibility 等名詞搭配。我們來看 2021 年 6 月六級真題閱讀中一句話。

Genetic selection is a way of exerting influence over others, "the ultimate collective control of human destinies," as writer H. G. Wells put it.

基因選擇是對他人施加影響的一種方式，是「對人類共同命運的終極掌控」，作者 H. G. 韋爾斯如是說。

perpetrator

我們在那篇剛講過，簡單復習一遍，動詞 perpetrate 是「犯罪；干壞事」，perpetrator 意思是「作惡者；犯罪者」。

We would be so much calmer around adults, if we could resort to some of the unflustered poise we naturally use around children. Small children sometimes behave in really maddening ways. They scream at the person who's looking after them, angrily push away a bowl of animal pasta, and throw away something you've just fetched for them. But we rarely feel personally agitated or wounded by their behavior. And the reason is that we don't assign a negative motive or mean intention to a small person. We reach around for the most benevolent interpretations. We probably think that they're just a bit tired, or their gums are sore, or they're upset by the arrival of a younger sibling. We've got a large repertoire of alternative explanations ready in our heads, and none of these lead us to panic or get terribly agitated.

resort to sth

金牌寫作用語 + 四級詞匯

resort 表示「度假勝地」是我們很熟悉的用法，自從冬奧會召開后，「滑雪勝地」成了熱門去處，其英文便是 ski resorts。而這個單詞的另一詞性也很常用。比較特殊的是，resort 通常只構成搭配 resort to sth 使用，表示 to make use of sth, especially sth bad，「訴諸；求助于」某物，通常是在沒有別的其他方式時求助于一些不好的事物，比如，resort to violence「訴諸暴力」。

We want to resolve this crisis without resorting to violence.

我們想不通過暴力解決這場危機。

unflustered

詞根詞綴

詞典不容易查到這個詞匯，但要想搞定它也很簡單，只需要去掉兩個詞綴，就出現了詞根 fluster，意思是 to make someone nervous and confused「使緊張，使慌亂」。不過它很少作動詞，而是變成形容詞 flustered「緊張的，心煩意亂的」，可以替換 nervous, anxious, agitated。

If I look flustered it's because I'm trying to do about twenty things at once.

如果我看上去很慌亂，那是因為我正試圖同時做大約20 件事情。

poise

六級詞匯

poise 和 pose 只有一個字母之差，作名詞時它用來表示 a calm and confident manner「鎮定，沉著」。若是用一個成語來翻譯，那可以譯為「泰然自若」。另外，poise 也可以表示「體態，儀態」。

What amazed him even more than her appearance was her poise.

她的容貌讓他驚嘆，而更讓他驚訝的是她的沉著。

animal pasta

pasta 泛指意大利所有面食，所以西餐出鏡率最高的面條——意面也是一種 pasta。意面分為很多種類，最常見的是長條意面 spaghetti 和通心粉 macaroni。animal pasta 更接近通心粉，空心而且很短，只不過形狀做成了小朋友喜聞樂見的動物樣子，所以我們譯為「動物通心粉」更容易讓讀者想象到形狀。

agitated

六級詞匯

這個形容詞與 nervous，anxious 類似，表示「緊張不安的，焦慮的」。動詞是 agitate「使焦慮不安」。

The thought of them getting her possessions when she dies agitates her.

一想到他們可能會在她死后得到她的財產，她就心緒不安。

benevolent

六級詞匯 + 考研詞匯

有些詞當你看到它就會覺得它長得慈眉善目的。benevolent 的意思是 kind, helpful and generous，既可以形容人「仁愛的；樂善好施的」，也可以形容態度、笑容等「和藹的」。比如，a benevolent smile。

The company has proved to be a most benevolent employer.

事實證明，這家公司是非常好的雇主。

repertoire /?rep?twɑ?/

六級詞匯 + 考研詞匯

這個讀音奇怪的單詞來自法語，它不僅是六級大綱要求大家記憶的詞匯，也是考研大綱詞匯。其實我們在之前的寫作系列中見過它，本義是指「全部劇目，常備節目」，后來詞義擴大化，引申為 all the things that a person is able to do，指一個人的「全部技能」。

而且，它常和 of 構成短語 a wide/large repertoire of sth「豐富的，許多的」。所以文中 a large repertoire of alternative explanations 是指「許多其他解釋」。下面我們大聲朗讀 2020 年 7 月六級閱讀中的一句話。

Instead of engaging babies in dialog or having them execute complex motor tasks, the newer methods capitalize on behaviors that have a firm place in infants' natural behavior repertoire: looking, listening, sucking, making facial expressions, gestures and simple manual actions.

這些更為新穎的研究方法不是讓嬰兒參與對話，也不是讓他們執行復雜的動作，而是充分利用嬰兒已經牢牢掌握的那些自然行為：看、聽、吮吸、做表情、做手勢以及簡單的手部動作。

The calming thought is to imagine that they're suffering off-stage in some area we can't see. To be mature is to learn to imagine this zone of pain in spite of the lack of much available evidence. They may not look as if they were maddened by an inner psychological ailment. They may seem chirpy and full of themselves, but the pin simply must be there or they would not be causing us harm.

原本表示「舞臺外的，幕后的」，舞臺之外便是臺下，臺下的生活才是現實，所以這個詞后來引申為「臺下的，現實生活中的」。此外，off-stage 還可以作副詞。

Despite their bitter screen rivalry, off-stage they are close friends.

雖然他們在銀幕上是誓不兩立的對手，在現實生活中卻是至交。

ailment

四級詞匯

相比 illness，ailment 要輕很多。它指的是 an illness that is not very serious「疾病，小病」，比如，minor ailments「不嚴重的小病」。

動詞是去掉 -ment 后綴的 ail， 可以表示「使患病；使不適」，但更常用來表示 to cause problems for sb / sth「使麻煩，困擾」。

This initiative is not the answer to what ails our educational system.

這一方案并不能解決我們教育體制的弊病。

chirpy

這個形容詞長用來形容人 happy and active 「歡快的，心情好的」，比如 a chirpy student。相當于 cheerful, lively, spirited 等。
