吃飯找「飯搭子」，旅游找「旅游搭子」，自習(xí)找「自習(xí)搭子」……無論是什么活動(dòng)，你總能找到搭子。而且，這股風(fēng)潮愈演愈烈。「搭子」用英文怎么說？

《南華早報(bào)》用了 temporary partners，因?yàn)榇钭幽芑鸬脑蛑痪褪恰笗簳r(shí)性」。在某個(gè)階段做某件事，我需要一個(gè)陌生人作為同伴，以免形單影只，太過孤獨(dú)。但我并不希望搭子深入了解我是誰，我在過什么樣的生活。于是這種「輕型社交」成了很多年輕人的首選。

seek 表示 look for someone or something「尋找」。2013 年考研作文曾經(jīng)考察大家是否熟悉「求職」的英文表達(dá)，我們當(dāng)然可以用 look/hunt for jobs 來表達(dá)，但如果你能用上 seek jobs 或 seek employment，無疑會(huì)為你的作文增色不少。加上 out 后，整個(gè)詞組的意思和 seek 依舊很像，表示 to try to find someone or something, especially when this is difficult「找出，找到」。

Now is the time for local companies to seek out business opportunities in Europe.

對于當(dāng)?shù)毓緛碚f，現(xiàn)在是時(shí)候去歐洲尋求商機(jī)了。

companionship

詞根詞綴 + 四級詞匯

如果不知道這個(gè)詞，那我們就把后面的 -ship 去掉，露出真身 companion。前面的 com- 常用來表示 together; with 「共同」，所以 companion 是「同伴」的意思。這個(gè)「同伴」既可以是陪伴身邊的「伴侶」，也可以是志趣相同的「伙伴」，比如， travelling companions 「旅伴」。

-ship 常用來表示 the state or quality of「狀態(tài)；性質(zhì)」，最著名的當(dāng)屬 friendship「友情」。所以 companionship 是什么你猜到了嗎？既可以指「友情」，也可以指「陪伴」。我們來看 2021 年 12 月六級閱讀中的一句話。

這個(gè)短語的意思是 to become involved with and try to understand sth / sb「融入， 與……建立密切關(guān)系」。在有些語境中， engage with sb 用大白話來說就是「與某人打成一片」。我們來看《經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)人》的一個(gè)例句。

When it works, investors engage with a firm’s managers to verify that the business is well run.

起效時(shí)，投資者會(huì)與公司的主管互動(dòng)，以驗(yàn)證業(yè)務(wù)運(yùn)作良好。

熟詞生義 + 四級詞匯 + 考研詞匯

眾所周知，novel 是「小說」。不過它還有形容詞詞性，而且也很常用，表示「新穎的；新奇的」。所以「新想法」以后我們就可以不用 new ideas，而是改用 novel ideas。文中的 novel form 則是指「新形式」。對應(yīng)的名詞為 novelty。來看《經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)人》的一個(gè)例句。

And when the data show that things have gone off kilter, novel digital treatments may come to the rescue.

而當(dāng)數(shù)據(jù)顯示事態(tài)已偏離正軌時(shí)，新的數(shù)宇療法可能會(huì)前來救駕。

social interaction

六級詞匯

動(dòng)詞 interact 可以表示 to communicate with sb, especially while you work, play or spend time with them「交流；溝通」。如果想表示「與某人溝通」，那我們就在后面加上 with sb。所以 interaction 的意思也是「交流」，而 social interaction 就是「社會(huì)交往」，也就是「社交」。

The play follows the interactions of three very different characters.

該劇以三個(gè)性格迥異的人物之間的交往為主線展開情節(jié)。

revolve around sth

revolve 表示「旋轉(zhuǎn)」這個(gè)動(dòng)作，比如，地球圍繞太陽轉(zhuǎn)，就是 The earth revolves around the sun. 第二，revolve 可以指某本書或者爭論「圍繞……展開」，非常適合大家在寫英文讀書報(bào)告時(shí)用上。本文作者想表達(dá)的是，「搭子」這種社交形式的基礎(chǔ)是共同興趣。

第三，revolve 還可以指某個(gè)人「以……為中心」。在中國，家長往往圍著孩子轉(zhuǎn)，這就是「以孩子為中心」，英文可寫為 revolve around their children。微軟曾一度陷入困境，但新產(chǎn)品 Azure 的發(fā)展壯大，讓這個(gè)巨頭有了新的生機(jī)。《經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)人》在描寫此事時(shí)用到了我們剛才所學(xué)的這個(gè)短語。

guise 不認(rèn)識(shí)，但 disguise 你是不是覺得眼熟呢？二者確實(shí)有關(guān)系，而且還很親密。guise 常用來表示「形式；外表」，所以 in many guises 是指「形式多種多樣」。

另外，guise 還可以表示「偽裝」，比如， under the guise of friendship 是指「打著友誼的幌子」。因此 disguise 有「 假扮；偽裝」之義。

四級詞匯 + 考研詞匯

initiate 是一個(gè)動(dòng)詞，而且是及物動(dòng)詞，表示 to make sth begin「發(fā)起，創(chuàng)始」。比如 initiate a discussion 是指「發(fā)起討論」， initiate legal proceedings 則是「提出法律訴訟」。與下文 establish 屬于同近義替換。

Doctors have initiated a series of tests to determine the cause of the problem.

醫(yī)生開始了一系列的檢查以確定問題的起因。

delve into sth

delve 原本指的是在包、盒子等內(nèi)「翻找」，類似 dig, scrabble 。比如， delve into your pocket 是指「在口袋中翻找」。如果我們想找的不是某件具體的東西，而是抽象的一件事呢？于是 delve 引申出另一個(gè)義項(xiàng)——to try to find more information about someone or something「探索，探究」，和 explore 類似。通常和 into 搭配，構(gòu)成 delve into sth。所以原文 delve into my life 意思是「深入我的生活」。

downgrade expectations

六級詞匯

down 是「下」，grade 是「分?jǐn)?shù)」，所以 downgrade 是「下分」？聽上去不太對的樣子。grade 除了表示「分?jǐn)?shù)」外，還常表示「等級，品級」，所以「低等產(chǎn)品」是 low grade products。在此基礎(chǔ)上，grade 還可以表示「職級」。所以 downgrade 的本義是「使降職，使降級」。

升職時(shí)收獲別人的艷羨，而降職時(shí)往往會(huì)得到眾人的輕視，正所謂「人走茶涼」。所以 downgrade 引申為 to make something seem less important or valuable than it is「貶低，降低，低估」。于是原文這個(gè)搭配的意思水落石出， downgrade expectations 意思是「降低期望值」，可替換 lower / dampen expectations。
